How to Play Kemps – Rules for Kemps Card Game

Kemps is an easy to play fun card game to play with friends and family. And of course, you do not know how to play Kemps but don’t worry because it is very easy to learn. So, let’s start with How to Play Kemps.

Required

Deck

A 52 card standard deck is used. However, depending upon the number of players more than one deck can be used. Like, if there are more than 10 players, you can use two 52 cards standard decks.

Players

This game is played in pairs and a minimum of 2 pairs are required to play the game. So, at least 4 players required and there is no limit for maximum players. However, the number of players should be even to ensure that all the players form part of a pair.

The Object of The Game

Whenever a team wins the round, its opponent teams get a letter of the word “KEMPS” as a score. Also whenever a team loses in case of “Stop Kemps”(Discussed letter in the guide), it gets a letter of the word “KEMPS” as a score. And when a team completes the whole word “KEMPS”, it loses the game. So, the main objective is to get the minimum letters of the word “KEMPS”.

The Object of The Round

The object of the round is to obtain four cards of the same rank and after obtaining the cards your partner to say “Kemps” or in the other case if your partner obtains four cards of the same rank then you have to say “Kemps”.

But you can’t talk or speak to each other during the game. So, you have to decide some signals or gestures to communicate with each other about when to say “Kemps”. This is decided at the beginning of the game. Let’s see in details:-

The Gameplay

First, all the players are divided into teams. All teams must have only two players.

After forming the teams, some preparation time is given to all the teams to decide the signals or gestures. But remember, signals must be non-verbal.

After that, all the players get settle down and the players of the same team should sit across each other.

Then, the dealer deals four cards to each player and also puts 4 fresh cards face-up in the center of the table. (There are no rules for the selection of the dealer, you can select randomly)

After receiving the cards, all players start exchanging them with the cards in the center of the table and tries to get four cards of the same rank.

There is no structured turn pattern. So, every player is free to exchange a card with the cards in the center at any time. But any player should not have more than four cards in hand at a time. Also, if two or more players want the same card from the table than the first one to touch the card gets that card.

If during the game, at any point no players want to exchange a card with the cards in the center then the dealer replaces the four cards from the center with the new fresh cards and the game continues.

The game or say the round ends in two different ways:

First, when a player says “Kemps” or “Stop Kemps”:-

Kemps

As soon as a player gets four cards of the same rank, He/She gives the signal to the teammate. The teammate says “Kemps” and wins the round and all the opponent teams get a letter of the word “Kemps”.

Whenever a player says “Kemps” during the game, his/her teammate has to reveal his/her cards. If he/she has four cards of the same rank than his/her team wins but if he/she does not have four cards of the same rank than his/her team loses and gets a letter of the word “Kemps”.

Stop Kemps

Whenever any player says “Stop Kemps”, the round gets over. A player says “Stop Kemps” when he/she suspects that another player has four cards of the same rank. After a player says “Stop Kemps”, the player who is getting stopped has to reveal his/her cards.

If the “Stopped” player has four cards of the same rank then his/her team loses the round and gets a letter of the word “Kemps”. If the “Stopped” player does not have four cards of the same rank then the team of the player who said “Stop Kemps” loses the round and gets a letter of the word “Kemps”.

Second, at the Real Deal:-

Real Deal is the situation when none of the players want to exchange their cards with the cards in the center of the table and the dealer does not have fresh cards to replace the cards in the center.

At the Real Deal, the round comes to an end. Nobody wins or loses and no one gets the letter of the word “Kemps”. Dealer deals cards for the next round and a new round begins.

Winning the Game

As soon as the teams complete the word “Kemps”, it gets out of the game one by one. And the team staying till the last in the game wins the game.
