1000 is a trick-taking type card game. In this guide on How to Play 1000, we have covered the game from the basics, so you’ll be able to play the game by only reading this guide. Let’s start the guide on How to Play 1000.
A 24 cards deck is used. The deck consists Ace (A), King (K), Queen (Q), Jack (J), 10, and 9 of all four suits.
3 players required to play this game.
The Object of The Game
The main objective of the game is to be the first player to score 1000 points. A player scores points based on the value of cards won in a trick. A trick includes one card played by each player.
Determining Dealer and Dealing The Cards
The dealer is selected randomly. After selection, the dealer deals 7 cards to each player face-down, one card at a time. The dealer also deals 3 cards in the middle. The dealership transfers to the player on the left of the dealer at the end of each round.
After dealing the cards, the bidding begins. The player on the left of the dealer is first to bid and then the turn to bid moves in a clockwise manner. Each player bids the number of points that he/she expects to win at the end of each round. Each bid should be higher than the previous bid. The minimum bid is 100 and the bid should be in multiples of 5. Example: 100, 105, 110, 115, and so on.
If a player does not want to bid then he/she can pass. A player making a pass is not able to bid anymore. The last player standing wins the bid. After bidding, the dealer turns-up the 3 cards of the middle. The bid winner takes those 3 cards in his/her hands with the 7 cards initially dealt to him/her and then passes one unwanted card to each of the other players face-down.
If the first two players pass the bid then the dealer has to take the bid for 100 points. A player who has a marriage(King and Queen of the same suit) in his/her hand can only bid more than 120 points. If a player has all four 9s in his/her hands after dealing or after the bid winner passes the cards, he/she can throw the hand immediately and the dealer has to deal new cards.
The bid winner leads the first trick by playing a card in the middle. And then each player plays a card in a clockwise manner. A trick includes one card played by each player. All players have to follow the lead suit. However, if a player cannot follow the suit led, he/she can play a card of any other suit.
The player who played the highest-ranking card of the suit led wins the trick. Winner of a trick leads the next trick. A round ends when all cards are played.
If a player has a marriage(King and Queen of the same suit), he/she can declare the marriage and score points. A player can only declare a marriage after winning a trick. After declaring a marriage, the player has to lead the next trick with one of those two cards.
Whenever a player declares a marriage, the suit of that marriage becomes the Trump suit until the next marriage is declared. A trump suited card outranks all other suited cards. If the Trump suited cards are played during a trick then the player who played the highest-ranking Trump suited card wins the trick.
After completing a round, the players’ scores are counted. The players get a score based on the value of the cards won by the player. The points scored by the players are rounded off to the nearest of 5. Value of cards are as follows:
|Ace (A)||11 Points|
|King (K)||4 Points|
|Queen (Q)||3 Points|
|Jack (J)||2 Points|
The player also gets points for each marriage declared. The points are different for the marriage of each suit. It is shown below:
If the bid winner scores the same or more points than mentioned in the bid then he/she gets those points. And if the bid winner could not fulfill the bid then the points bid by him/her are deducted from his/her total points.
If a player scores Zero in a round then his/her score is reduced by 120 points.
If a player has a score between 880 points to 995 points, it is known as being on the barrel. And the player’s score is reduced to 880 points. If a player is on the barrel, he/she has a chance to win the game by becoming the bid winner and winning 120 or more points in one of the three following rounds. There are 3 possibilities:
|The player could not win the bid in any of the three following rounds.||In this case, the player’s score is reduced by 120 Points.|
|The player wins the bid in any of the three following rounds and fulfills the bid and scores 120 points or more.||The player wins the game.|
|The player wins the bid in any of the three following rounds and could not fulfill the bid.||The points mentioned in the bid are reduced from the total score of the player.|
The first player able to score 1000 points wins the game.
